Mellon Foundation Contributes Second Round of Support in Katrina Aftermath

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today that its Trustees have approved a second round of support for educational institutions in New Orleans affected severely by Hurricane Katrina. These new grants total $4.81 million.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today that its Trustees have approved a second round of support for educational institutions in New Orleans affected severely by Hurricane Katrina. These new grants, totaling $4.81 million, will go to:

  • Two universities in New Orleans – Tulane University ($2.5 million) and Dillard University ($1.5 million) – who will work with Loyola University and Xavier University of Louisiana to reopen their academic programs in January 2006.
  • The Southern Education Foundation, Inc. ($400,000), which will make a grant to Tougaloo College to address immediate needs of students from the Gulf States.
  • Associated Colleges of the South ($250,000), which will make a grant to Rhodes College to address immediate needs of students from the Gulf States.
  • Southwestern University ($160,000), in collaboration with the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE), to work with Dillard faculty members as they recreate their teaching materials.

In making the announcement, William G. Bowen, the Foundation's President stated, "The Foundation continues to believe that it should focus on the needs of the colleges, universities, and cultural institutions that are among the greatest assets of this devastated region." The Foundation's first round of grants, announced on September 19, 2005, provided $5.5 million in support to educational and cultural institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is a private foundation, with an endowment of approximately $4.7 billion, which makes grants on a selective basis in the areas of higher education, museums and art conservation, performing arts, and conservation and the environment.
