Mellon Foundation Contributes Third Round of Support in Katrina Aftermath

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today that its Trustees approved a third round of support to assist institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina. These new grants, totaling $903,000, will go to:

  • The New Orleans Museum of Art ($500,000) to support core curatorial, exhibition, and educational activities in advance of the Museum's reopening to the public in 2006.
  • The University of Delaware ($403,000) for use by the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation to provide sustained recovery and conservation assistance to cultural institutions on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The Foundation's first round of grants, announced on September 19, 2005, provided $5.5 million in support to educational and cultural institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina. The second round of grants, announced on November 7, 2005, provided $4.81 million in support to educational institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is a private foundation, with an endowment of approximately $4.7 billion, which makes grants on a selective basis in the areas of higher education, museums and art conservation, performing arts, and conservation and the environment.
