2002 Distinguished Achievement Award Recipients Named

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has named the second group of Distinguished Achievement Award recipients. Intended to underscore the decisive contributions the humanities make to the nation’s intellectual life, the awards, amounting to as much as $1.5 million each, honor scholars who have made significant contributions to humanistic inquiry.

Three Senior Appointments for ARTstor at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today three appointments as part of its ARTstor initiative. Effective today, William Ying will be ARTstor’s Chief Technology Officer; as of September 25th, Linda Tadic will be ARTstor’s Director of Operations, and Tony Gill will be the Director of Metadata. ARTstor is the Mellon Foundation’s initiative to develop, “store,” and distribute digital images and related scholarly materials for non-commercial educational and scholarly purposes.

Final Round of Grants to be Made to Parks and Arts Organizations Affected by Events of September 11

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today a final round of grants, totaling approximately $6.2 million, to be made from the Foundation’s special $50 million fund to assist New York City museums, libraries, performing arts organizations, and public parks that were directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001. As reported earlier, this round focused primarily on public parks and related organizations including the City’s botanical gardens and zoos. A significant portion of the funds awarded to the City Parks Foundation will be used to provide assistance to small and mid-sized park organizations throughout the City.

Third Round of Grants to be Made to Arts Organizations Affected by Events of September 11

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today a third round of grants, totaling approximately $28.0 million, to be made from the Foundation's special $50 million fund to assist New York City cultural and performing arts organizations that were directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001. The recipients are forty-six performing arts organizations, twelve museums, the City's three circulating library systems, and the Research Libraries of the New York Public Library. To date, the Foundation has awarded a total of $43 million as part of the special initiative.

Second Round of Grants to be Made to Arts Organizations Affected by Events of September 11

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today a second round of grants, totaling approximately $6.6 million, to be made from the Foundation’s special $50 million fund to assist New York City cultural and performing arts organizations, as well as public parks, that were directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001. The recipients are twenty-nine museums and related organizations, which are generally small to mid-sized. Evaluation of the requests from additional cultural organizations and performing arts groups is ongoing. To date, the Foundation has awarded approximately $15 million as part of the special initiative.

Appointment of new Financial Vice President and Vice President for Operations and Planning

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today the appointment of two new officers: John E. Hull will assume the position of Financial Vice President, effective April 8, 2002; Glenda Burkhart has been appointed to a newly created position of Vice President for Operations and Planning, effective February 25, 2002.
