2005 Distinguished Achievement Award Recipients Named

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has named the fifth group of recipients of its Distinguished Achievement Awards. Intended to underscore the decisive contributions the humanities make to the nation’s intellectual life, the awards, amounting to as much as $1.5 million each, honor scholars who have made significant contributions to humanistic inquiry.

Mellon Foundation Contributes Third Round of Support in Katrina Aftermath

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today that its Trustees approved a third round of support to assist institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina. These new grants total $903,000.

Mellon Foundation Contributes Second Round of Support in Katrina Aftermath

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today that its Trustees have approved a second round of support for educational institutions in New Orleans affected severely by Hurricane Katrina. These new grants total $4.81 million.

Bowen Addresses the 147th Association of Research Libraries Annual Meeting

Ten years after speaking to ARL about the nascent JSTOR, William G. Bowen reviewed the subsequent development of JSTOR into a fully alive and robust digital resource, and introduced recent Mellon-supported initiatives Aluka, ARTstor, Ithaka, and Portico. His talk is entitled "'New Times Always; Old Time We Cannot Keep',".

Mellon Foundation Contributes $10 Million in Katrina Aftermath

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced today that it will contribute $10 million to assist educational and cultural institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Mellon Suspends Fellowships in Humanistic Studies

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has decided to suspend funding for its portable one-year Fellowships in Humanistic Studies as of the fall of 2006. There will be no competition in the coming academic year.

Don Randel Elected New President of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
July 26, 2005

Don Michael Randel has been chosen by the Board of Trustees to serve as the President of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, effective July 1, 2006. Randel has served as President of the University of Chicago since 2000. The election of Randel is the result of an extensive search carried out by the Trustees over the last year.
