Heather Kim joined The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in September 2016 with more than 20 years of experience in higher education research, administration, and consulting. As director of institutional research, Ms. Kim directly supports the president and the executive vice president and oversees the research function of the Foundation. She works closely with senior program staff to design research studies that address the program objectives of the Foundation and provides analytic support and expertise to Foundation staff.
Previously, Ms. Kim served as associate vice president for policy analysis and research and a member of the president's cabinet at the University of Wisconsin (UW) System. In this capacity, she provided leadership and analytic expertise on policy issues to the UW System Board of Regents, UW System Administration, and UW institutions. Prior to her tenure at the UW System, Ms. Kim served as director of institutional research at Dartmouth College, where she coordinated the institution's reaccreditation efforts as Accreditation Liaison Officer to the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), served as Dartmouth's Assembly Representative to the Consortium on Financing Higher Education (COFHE), and was a member of the president's cabinet and executive council. Earlier in her career, she held positions in the institutional research area at higher education institutions, including Yale and Cornell.
Ms. Kim has served on committees for a number of professional organizations, including the Association for Institutional Research (AIR), Ivy League Institutional Research Group, North East Association for Institutional Research (NEAIR), and COFHE. She served on the advisory committee to the National Association of System Heads (NASH) Study of System Roles in Institutional Research and on the Wisconsin Educational Research Advisory Council for the State Superintendent. She is the author of a number of policy reports and research presentations on significant issues in American higher education, including access, diversity, and educational attainment. She has served as an external evaluator for the decennial reaccreditation of higher education institutions and has received professional recognitions and awards on a number of occasions. She is a member of the board of directors of the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) and of the NSC Research Center.
Ms. Kim earned her doctorate in higher education administration and policy, with a minor in statistics from North Carolina State University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship program in the Educational Policy Research Division at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and the Harvard University Institute of Educational Management (IEM).
