MMUF PhD Imani Perry Wins National Book Award

Imani Perry, the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and an MMUF PhD, has won the 2022 National Book Award for nonfiction for her book South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation.

Her previous books include the memoir Breathe: A Letter to My Sons (2020); May We Forever Stand: A History of the Black National Anthem (2019); and Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry (2018).

Dr. Perry was selected as an MMUF fellow at Yale University and earned her PhD in American studies from Harvard University.
