Humanities in Place
How and where we tell our stories matters.

Humanities in Place supports a fuller exploration of communities and sites located in and connected historically to the US. Working with media, heritage and public spaces, history museums and other institutions, and conveners of shared experiences—including the digital or ephemeral—we strive to expand the public expression of the histories that have made us and the values we hold. Our program works across and within diverse communities, encouraging bold, innovative rethinking of past practice, as well as visionary new approaches for how to collectively understand, uplift, and celebrate more complete stories about who we are.
How to apply
In our Humanities in Place program, grants are made to organizations that advance the Foundation’s charitable mission and strategic goals.
At this time, all grants made through this program result from invitations issued by Mellon to institutions with which staff have engaged in preliminary exchanges. Eligible institutions and organizations are working in support of communities and individual artists. Mellon does not make grants directly to individuals, although we do support regranting programs that benefit individuals.

Program Director, Humanities in Place
“Humanities in Place is about human connection. The work you are doing is calling people in to learn about, and connect with, each other.”

We partner with communities to reimagine our public places.
